Marja Bål Nango is a film director, scriptwriter, and producer. She studied directing at Nordland College of Art and Film, producing through a collaboration between the International Sámi Film Institute and Sámi University, and screenwriting at the ISFI X Alma X Netflix Writing Academy.
She wrote, directed, and produced the short film Hilbes biigá, which was screened at nearly 30 film festivals and won the UR Award for Best Film at the Uppsala International Short Film Festival. Her latest short film, Njoukcamat (The Tongues), won Best International Short Film at the Palm Springs Shortfest and Best Director at the Rhode Island Film Festival in 2020. It also qualified for Academy Award consideration at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival.
In 2021, Marja was named the Merata Mita Fellow at Sundance Film Festival. She developed her feature film project The Herder through the Sundance Screenwriters Lab in 2022 and the Toronto International Film Festival’s Film Lab, receiving the Every Story Fellowship in 2023.
